Modern Contemporary Glass Addition and Renovation

Sleek Modern Mosaic Bath

This project transformed a large, ordinary, suburban house into a purposeful contemporary home designed to support the owner’s modern-day lifestyle. An analysis of the existing house revealed that low window and door head heights
combined with a deep floor plate resulted in a dark, cave-like feel in the house. In response, a two-story glass box addition was added to contain a breakfast room on the upper level and an exercise room on the lower level. Natural daylight and views to the surrounding parkland were increased by enlarging existing windows and doors. The original multi-level deck was replaced with a clean, single level deck and simple stair to the lawn below.

Internally, the house was completely reworked to provide an open family room and kitchen as well as a generous two-story sky lit entry. The existing carpeted stair was replaced with a minimal open riser stair hand crafted from white oak. At the second level, all glass railings replaced low gypsum board walls. The master suite was completely reconfigured to eliminate a balcony that encroached on the entry area. Environmental strategies were integrated
throughout the design including thermal panels for hot water and a green roof.
